AngloGold closes Argentine mine due to Covid-19

The gold producer says it is developing plans to help regain delayed production once mining operations resume.

AngloGold Ashanti has temporarily closed Cerro Vanguardia, the Argentine gold mine that it has put up for sale. The mine was set to account for about 6% of the gold producer's output this year.

Although there are no reported Covid-19 cases at Cerro Vanguardia, it was required to suspend mining activities after Argentina implemented countrywide restrictions on travel and border closings to the end of this month. It said safety and environmental monitoring activities would continue and plans were being developed to help regain delayed production once mining operations resumed.

AngloGold said it remained in a state of high-alert and preparedness to deal with the global challenge presented by the outbreak of the virus, including steps to prevent its spread, stepped up screening and surveillance of employees, banned non-essential travel, instituted clear self-quarantine measures where applicable and increased hygiene awareness and facilities across its operations.

So far, it said the worldwide outbreak hadn't impacted production and that it remained in close contact with authorities in each country and with its key suppliers and other business partners to help ensure business continuity and mitigate any interruptions that may occur. Apart from Argentina, Anglogold mines for gold in Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Brazil and Australia. It sold its last remaining SA gold mine, Mponeng, to Harmony Gold Mining last month. Last week, it confirmed a worker at its Obuasi Gold Mine in Ghana, who had recently returned from the UK, tested positive with the virus.

Its shares rose 2.7% to R263.70 on Friday, lagging a 7.3% improvement in the JSE's Gold Mining Index.
