David Munro takes over the reins at Liberty - Marylou Greig

David Munro, who has been with the Standard Bank Group for 21 years, will take over the running of the Bank's 53% held asset Liberty, with immediate effect.

His brief as Liberty's CEO is to work on a turnaround plan at the insurer which has been struggling for some time to increase profits. His priority is to enable Liberty to achieve its growth by focusing on a short-term recovery plan and a longer-term strategy to reinforce its competitiveness.

Munro joined Standard Bank in 1996. In 2003 he was appointed deputy chief executive, corporate and investment banking (CIB) South Africa and to Exco in 2004. In 2006 Munro was appointed chief executive, CIB South Africa. He was appointed global head, investment banking in 2009 and chief executive CIB in 2011. He joined the Liberty board as a non-executive director in February 2017.

Munro is a CA, having graduated from the University of Cape Town and attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. He was selected by the World Economic Forum as a Global leader in 2009.
