Gold Fields hires former Amplats boss as CEO

Chris Griffith will take over from Nick Holland, who has led the gold mining company for the past 13 years.

Gold Fields has appointed former Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) CEO Chris Griffith to replace Nick Holland when he retires at the end of March. Holland has been CEO for 13 years.

The gold mining company said Griffith had been appointed CEO designate and would take over on 1 April. Holland had agreed to retire six months earlier than required to facilitate the leadership transition.

Griffith was CEO of Amplats for almost eight years before he stepped down last April. Before that, he was CEO of Kumba Iron Ore, another company in the Anglo American stable, for four years. He has a B.Eng (Mining) Honours from the University of Pretoria and has completed various leadership development programmes at the University of South Africa and through Anglo American. Gold Fields' chair Cheryl Carolus said he had "deep-rooted operational mining experience and an impressive track record of delivering safe operational performance and leading effective change".

Gold Fields attributed its transformation to a global, highly profitable and sustainable company to Holland. In 2008, two-thirds of its production came from SA; in 2020 approximately 90% emanated from outside the country with all its mines highly mechanised and increasingly automated.

Gold Fields' shares rose 5.1% to R144.43 yesterday.
