Three for two offers boost Clicks' sales

The pharmacy group says strong promotional activity helped lift sales over the festive season

Promotions and "three for two" offers over the festive season have helped attract customers through Clicks' doors, with the pharmacy chain reporting a 14.2% rise in sales for the 20 weeks to 14 January. It says it has remained resilient in the current tight consumer spending environment.

Some of the growth was driven by new stores, with comparable sales growth of 7.5% and volume growth of 4.8% as it increased its prices by 2.7% on average. Retail sales were up by 13% ad 6.7% on a comparable store basis, while UPD, its wholesale and distribution business, grew turnover by 11.6%.

Clicks says it's also encouraged by the incremental sales from its online store over Christmas. It expects inflation to moderate in the months ahead, particularly in UPD which will be impacted by the recently announced Single Exit Price increase of just 1.26% for 2018.

The group is scheduled to release interim results for the six months to 28 February on 19 April. Its shares gained 0.8% to R174.99 yesterday.
